The Z Shaped Creation: A Bioclimatic Solar House in Fasoula, Cyprus

Creating Harmony Between Design and Environment

The inspiration that triggered the design of this bioclimatic solar house in Fasoula, Cyprus, was the will to create a white Z shaped form, that was going to characterize the morphology of the building.

A bioclimatic house in Fasoula, Cyprus, has caught the attention of design enthusiasts with its unique and innovative approach. Designed by Vassiliades Architects, this residential building stands out with its striking white Z-shaped form, which not only defines its appearance but also serves as a passive sun protection system.

The design of this 230 sqm house is a testament to the integration of bioclimatic methods into architectural development. The spaces within the house are translated into volumes that are carefully placed within the cavities of the white form, creating a composition that is both visually stunning and functional.

The design team, led by George Vassiliades, Stalli Talea, and Constantinos Vassiliades, aimed to create a harmonious and functional composition by incorporating bioclimatic principles. The use of exposed concrete, large wooden surfaces, and the neutral white color further enhance the modern minimalist aesthetic of the house.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was the integration of bioclimatic methods while ensuring the building's operational functionality. However, through meticulous planning and innovative design solutions, the team successfully achieved a balance between environmental sustainability and user comfort.

The house is built on a slope, with the parking spaces located in the basement. The use of stone masonry creates a solid morphological base that highlights the relationship between the building and its surroundings. The design's simple geometries and materials not only contribute to its modern aesthetic but also facilitate proper natural ventilation and lighting, resulting in energy savings and thermal comfort for the residents.

The construction of this bioclimatic solar house began in 2019 and was completed in 2020. Since then, it has garnered attention and recognition for its innovative design approach. In 2021, the design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness demonstrated in the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life.

The Z Shaped Creation stands as a testament to the possibilities of integrating bioclimatic methods into architectural design. It showcases how a harmonious relationship between design and the environment can be achieved, resulting in a functional and visually captivating residential building.
